If you went to Howard University, you know the rest. ”.....I go to Howard U!”
I have a dear friend from Ethiopia who is beyond proud of her heritage. She left Ethiopia when she was a teen and spent her high school, college, and now adult years in the United States. But still, her heart belongs to Ethiopia. We worked together in Long Beach, CA and shared many stories over the course of the year and a half we worked together so I had many stories related to my Howard days. She asked me one day, “why are you so proud of Howard University?” I replied, “Why are you so proud of Ethiopia?” That question alone answered hers.
I don’t know what it feels like for people outside of Howard University but for those who went to my school, we are forever connected. It’s a feeling that cannot be put into words, this bond that is shared with others who have graced the campus. You can’t buy it or bottle it up. You can only experience it and share that experience with others who have attended “the Mecca”.
