pop!life a view from the other side
when ms lovechilde asked me to contribute to her blog as a guest poster on the world of dad, i was at once flattered and bewildered. first, she never asks for my input in real life, so, i then became suspicious, as this may be a setup to get into the secret, inner workings of the labyrinth-like male mind….(more on that later). honestly, I don’t put a lot of stock into “being a father”. i am a father. it is at the core of all that i do, think, say… that being said, i am certain that i can shed light on the world as we view it. i shall name this corner…. pop!life – the view from the other side…..
we men are a rare breed. as fathers, we are not known as the nurturers…we solve problems and fix things….period. scrape your knee riding the skateboard? cry to mommy, get a band-aid from daddy (and a pat on the butt as you get back on that board)! however, as i am on my fourth go round with diaper changing, i have noticed that you hardly ever see changing tables in the mens’ bathroom. a quick google search reveals that i am not alone in noticing the dearth of “father-friendly” environs in restaurants and malls. guys (and gals) are really upset about this issue…. talk of boycotting restaurants, online changing table locators, etc. me? ehhh. no biggie. look, as I said, men solve problems/fix things… i’m a results oriented type of guy --- not a crusader. poopy diaper – change it…by any means necessary! in my life, I have learned to use facilities (some don’t deserve the “bathroom” moniker) in bars, port-a-potties, golf courses, outdoors….i’ll spare you the gory details, but suffice to say, i’ve become very resourceful. so, with kid in tow…you first have to assess the situation. what tools and resources are available? large vanity countertop? oversized handicap stall? any chairs in the room? big trashcan with a lid? got a towel? you have to make do with what you have… i steel myself with the daddy “warrior” attitude when i leave the house with the kids. two diapers in my back pocket, a few wipes in a ziplock bag, a hand towel, 1 bottle in the other pocket…and we’re out! it teaches resilience, self-sufficiency…. besides, there’s always a tj maxx or target nearby for a change of clothes!!
I don’t consider myself a girly girl but I do I do like things girly. I enjoy getting my hair done, my nails done, having makeup applied, and soaking in Calgon baths. I love wearing dresses and skirts, high heels that sparkle, and spraying pretty perfume. I don’t like bugs or dirt or getting my clothes wet. I’m a lady and like to be treated as such. I like to have the door opened, the chair pulled out, and need the man to take the lead. I’m slightly old-fashion that way. So how is it this gorgeous sexy woman can make me feel the way a man makes me feel? Her name is Helen Folasade Adu, better known as Sade, and she has one of the most melodic and sensual voices to ever kiss my ears. I cherish the day I first heard her sing. Many moons ago, my good friend Derick took me to my first Sade concert. We went to the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland, an outdoor arena where you can feeeel the music under the stars. Our seats were second row center, so close we could kiss Sade’s feet. There weren’t any pyrotechnics in her show. No backup dancers to supplement the entertainment. There wasn’t too much of anything except for a superior voice, controlled lighting, and an haute band to set the mood. I was mesmerized, truly captured under her sweetest taboo. And by the end of the night, I was a lesbian. I was so in love with Helen Folasade Adu I didn’t know what to do with myself. Is it a crime? And now, 10 years after her last masterpiece, Sade is blessing us with more of that tantalizing music we have enjoyed for over 20 years. Soldier of Love is due to be released February 8, 2010 and I am to the moon with anticipation. I’m almost positive a concert is on the horizon, which means I must start, putting my money aside NOW in order to get up close and personal with my sweet love again. Nothing can come between us.
This week I’m doing my favorite five places to get away. Getaways are places I use to go before I had kids. Now getaways are simply leaving the house by myself. 5. New York City New York is one of those places people either love or hate. I’m a lover. When I lived on the east coast and the Big Apple was a mere 4-hour car ride, it was one of those places I went to recharge my battery. Alicia Keys sings it best in “Empire State of Mind” -- ‘these streets will make you feel brand new, these lights will inspire you.’ I love the hustle and bustle with taxis racing through the streets and pedestrians scurrying off to wherever it is pedestrians go. The thing I love most about NYC? The shopping! It can be a little overwhelming at times but there’s no better place on earth to shop than New York City. 4. Amsterdam Although I haven’t been in over 10 years, Amsterdam is still at the top of my list of places for a getaway. When my aunt lived in Germany, we went over to Amsterdam a few times. That’s the beauty of Europe. The countries are small and close together. Amsterdam reminds me of NYC except it’s cleaner and freer. The countryside is breathtaking with countless tulips in the backdrop and romantic canals divide the streets. But I must admit, it is the coffee shops that make this historical city feel like a little piece of heaven. 3. Bloomfield, CT I know you’re scratching your head like “Bloomfield, Connecticut”? No, this isn’t a place that I would recommend someone to spend his or her one-week vacation especially in the winter. There is absolutely nothing (that I can think of) for a tourist to do in Bloomfield. There isn’t much for a resident of Bloomfield to do either. It’s one of my favorite destinations because it is home. As a grown up going through grown folks stuff, it’s nice to be able to go to a place that makes you feel like a kid again. What do I love most about little old Bloomfield? Being pampered and doing absolutely nothing. Most days I don’t even bother to get dressed. Total R&R. 2. Any Caribbean island This is the name of the getaway game. Jamaica, Aruba, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Dominican. It doesn’t matter just take your pick. The beaches are pristine, the residents are welcoming, and the attitude is whatever you like. What is better than laying out on a beach with a waiter bringing you nice fruity drinks all day? The thing I love most about the Caribbean….. the food! Oh my goodness. The fish tastes as if it were caught 5 minutes before your food was prepared, the fruit is freshly picked, and the alcohols are made locally. Ahhh, the beauty of the Caribbean. 1. Miami I don’t know what it is about Miami that makes me feel alive. Could be the sunshine or the beaches. Could be the strip in South Beach, the beautiful people, or the palm trees. Miami has it all. I love the cute little hotels on Ocean Avenue. Being able to walk to a nice restaurant and or bar where things are jumping off makes your stay stress free. I went to hang out in Miami one year for the Superbowl and ended up staying almost 2 weeks with my girlfriend Jennifer. It was so nice to pretend I lived there. We sunbathed in the morning, rode beachcombers through the streets in the afternoon, and club hopped at night. Wet Willies is one of the best spots in town. Give me one of those tall drinks and a bar stool facing Ocean and I’m posted for hours. What do I love most about Miami? The way I feel after 24 hours of all the above. Not too many feelings are better than that. What is your favorite getaway and why?
Just wanted to wish all my four followers a Happy Thanksgiving!! Hope you have a wonderful day with friends, family and food. Here's a question that's never been asked: What are you thankful for? I'm thankful for the man by my side and the three little critters that stick to me like glue. I'm thankful for the roof over my head in these hard economic times. I'm thankful for the sun that shines so bright in California. And I'm thankful that I am a childe of God. Peace and blessings! Gobble gobble.
Last night, in the middle of ESPN news, the plasma died. There was a loud bang similar to the sound of a gun in the distance, a little bit of smoke, and then...... nothing. Dead as a doornail. The funny thing about it, two minutes before it happened, my S.O. said, "I think we're watching the tv die. I think it's like dying right before our eyes." So we continued to watch it as the bottom of the screen got dimmer and dimmer. Then BAM! POOF!! Dead. We bought this Zenith back in April of 2005. I remember because it was a month before Mini Me was born. My S.O. looked online to see if perhaps this has happened to other Zenith customers. He learned that Zenith was bought out by LG and LG has been issuing extended warranties because this is a rather common occurrence. I consider us lucky to have had her for 4 years because others reported problems after one year, 6 months, and some poor guy only had his for 30 thirty days! If you Google "My Plasma Zenith went POP", the first thing you will see is something regarding a Zenith tv whose model is very similar to ours. There are a list of complaints that follow suit. So what do I do now without my little 42"? I feel like a piece of me has died. I don't watch a lot of television but I just like having it on. It comforts me. Sometimes I leave it on even when I'm not watching anything. It keeps me company. It was my friend. And now my friend is gone and all I have to listen to is screaming kids running circles around me. Oy vey!
Let me just start by saying I don't like carrying diaper bags. But as a mother of 3, I have no choice. I always manage to get stuck with the little extras: keys, gum, wallet, phone. None of these things belong to me. They belong to my S.O. who refuses to carry a man bag as I have quietly suggested for years. Getting dressed and out the door with 3 little ones under the age of 6 has its challenges so always having a diaper bag packed and either waiting at the door or sitting in the car, will save you a whole lot of time. Here are a few essentials to keep in your diaper bag: 10. Toys Packing two or three small toys to keep the little one active can come in handy if you ever find yourself with idle time while you're out and about. Bam Bam is 9 months and starting to get into that busy phase so keeping a couple of secret weapons in the bag can buy me a good 20 minutes. 9. BabyLegsThese little leg warmers are great when you experience temperature changes on your outing. The crazy thing about L.A. is it can be 90 degrees when you leave the house at 11am, but if you come home after the sun goes down, it may deep well into the low 60s. It doesn't matter what season - winter, spring, summer, fall. Having BabyLegs handy is a great way to combat the changes in temperature. 8. Snacks If your kids are anything like my kids, they graze. They never sit down and eat a complete meal. So by the time we are 30 minutes into our outing, they're already whining about hunger. Most of the time I'm prepared for their tomfoolery with fruit or graham crackers or something messy like apple sauce (I'm a gluten for punishment). Other times I just let them starve so they can learn a lesson in eating when you're fed. Nonetheless, for the most part, packing snacks is smart. 7. Small plastic bag/small grocery bag For kids of diapering age, it's a good idea to keep some sort of small plastic bag near by in the event of one of those Code Red diapers that cannot be disposed of in a person's home other than your own. Especially if that person doesn't have kids. You know the Code Red diapers, not intended for amateurs or first time moms. The one where the boo boo has somehow made its way up the center of your childe's spin and the smell makes you hack and gag. It is not for the weary! 6. Munchkin Formula Dispenser After three kids, I have found the ultimate life saver. I wish I could say this was my discovery but it was my 4 year old Mini Me that discovered this in the Target baby food aisle. My little shopper suggested I get this Munchkin Formula Dispenser and I only got it to appease her. Unbeknownst to me, this is the greatest invention EVER! You can pour three bottles worth of formula in the compartments, pack your water, and make fresh bottles on the go. Such a simple concept but then again, the best inventions are usually elementary. 5. Blanket Blankets serve multiple purposes. They are used for warmth, protection against germy surfaces, or just a comfort item for baby. Take them where ever you go. There is always a use for them. 4. Change of clothes & Ziplock bag for soiled items I can't tell you how many times I've been caught out there without a change of clothes. You think your kids are potty trained and they will give you sufficient amount of time to get him/her to the bathroom. However, they get caught up in something exciting and dare not inform you of their need to relieve their bladders until the very last second. I'm embarrassed to say that I have spent more than my fair share of money buying replacement clothes because I've run out the door without backup. 3. Diaper Bag BuddyThe Diaper Bag Buddy is like an emergency kit similar to one you might keep in your car. It is jam packed with organic diaper rash cream, natural aloe vera gel packs, organic face & Body Moisturizer, Latex Free Junior Bandages, natural tush wipes, a one time use thermometer, organic shampoo & body wash all wrapped up in a 100% recycled carry anywhere case. With kids, you never know what might happen at any given moment. The best thing about the Diaper Bag Buddy is that 10% of profits go to the disabled community. 2. Changing Pad Because it's always a mystery where and under what conditions you're going to have to change a diaper, a changing pad is your baby's tushy's best friend. Especially if you have one of those Code Red diapers. 1. Diapers! I say this as if it's a no-brainer but I have walked out of the house (many a day) without ONE diaper in my possession. How does that happen? I just don't understand me. It has even happened recently with baby #3. You would think I would have all of this down packed by now but there's a big part of me that's still sorta fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants. Just wing it. I think I'll get it in order by the time I have grandchildren. Which brings me to the disclaimer I should have put out there at the BEGINNING of this post. Even though I have pretty good ideas on how to pack diaper bags, I don't necessarily follow my own suggestions. But I will say, the days that I am organized and all of the above are on deck are the days that flow the smoothest. Hope I've helped at least one person out there. Tah tah!
I don't know about you, but I was a childe of the 80s. Back when all of the Top 10 songs were from British artists, MTV only played videos, and leg warmers were all the rage. Well guess who's back (but in a miniature more vibrant version)? BabyLegs are adorable leg warmers made out of 80% cotton, 15% polyester, and 5% spandex combination. Borne from one mother's need to keep her baby's legs warm, BabyLegs has sprouted into an assortment of designs and multiple purposes. Nicole Donnelly, a former stay-at-home mom created BabyLegs to keep her daughter's legs warm while she was diaper free to allow bad rashes to heal. This 'invention' not only allowed the rashes to heal but helped make diaper changes quick and easy. In addition to BabyLegs being functional, they are stylish. There is a design, color, or pattern that speaks to every personality. One wonderful alternative to wearing BabyLegs on the legs is wearing them on the arms. This style is especially popular with older kids, boys in particular. Leave a pair in your diaper bag in the summertime. Why would someone need leg warmers in the summer you ask? For those trips to the mall and other Artic places we find ourselves transported to in the middle of a heat wave. Whip a pair of BabyLegs out as you go from hot to cold in 10 seconds flat. That way, baby will stay warm at all times. BabyLegs are fun. They're creative. They're stylish. And best of all ---- They just make sense.
Today is the first day of the Thanksgiving break and we're all still lounging around in our PJs. It was nice not having to jump up this morning to prepare breakfast, pull out clothes for 2 1/2 kids, pack snacks, and shuttle the little ones off to their respective schools. It seems like all we do is go, go, go. This is the first year that Thanksgiving break is an entire week thanks to California's week economy. They have to cut costs some how and since so many families pull their kids out for a day or two this week, they eliminated the week all together. I tried not to plan too much this week because quite frankly, my body could use the break. It's not so difficult to tote around a 6 year old and 4 year. They are pretty self sufficient and can do things like make their own sandwiches, dress themselves, and fasten their seat belts. The one that slows me down is my 25lb nine month old. My shoulder muscles ache as if I'm training for a body building championship. All due to the ackward lifting, twisting, and building. It is because of little Bam Bam we're going to take it easy this week. Today, we're going to spend the afternoon with one of my former co-workers in beautiful Palos Verdes. She's originally from Brazil and has the most adorable accent. She's the type of person that wants you to come over just so you can be spoiled with food, wine, and good conversation. She lives within walking distance of a botanical garden so I think this will be a nice outing for the kiddos. And for mommy too. Well, it's just shy of 10am and since dad's not here, it will probably take me a good two hours to get the kids ready by myself. I better get started. Have a beautiful and blessed day!
BET.com is set to launch its first web series, "Buppies", on Tuesday, November 24. The online show chronicles the relationship dramas of a group of dysfunctional yet inseperable group of friends living in glitzy Black Hollywood. Part of the appeal of the show is that "Buppies" brings a professional cast of black actors with a "Sex and the City" flavor. The show does not come without drama behind the scenes which involves its star, Tatiyana Ali of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" fame and her former Harvard compadre, Julian Breece, who is the show's creator, writer, and director. Ali and her sister Anastasia Ali, invested $45,000 into the project which they claim was money lost before production of the pilot even began. The Ali sisters were also seeking rights to the series that were promised but never delivered. Last year on her MySpace page, Tatiyana explained her reason for taking on this project and bringing it to the web: "This is a project that has been three years in the making. The writer/director Julian Breece is a college friend who shared the idea with me about three years ago. Putting a project like this onto the TV air space was difficult. It’s a very different kind of show, a comedy/ drama that talks about everything from life and love, fashion, sexual orientation, pregnancy… basically all the things young adults are really going through. My sister Anastasia Ali and I started a production company about a year and a half ago with the purpose of making high end urban content. BUPPIES made alongside friend and producer Aaliyah Williams is our company’s first effort. With the advent of the webseries and the recent lack of African American original programing on TV these days we thought the series would really be well suited for internet broadcast. -- Tatyana Ali" Ali's character, Quinci, is a 26 year old Publicist who recently lost her father, a Hollywood celebrity, and was dumped by her fiance. She experiences the perks and pitfalls faced by LA's young black power elite. The supporting cast include Ernest Waddell who plays Shaka, a Corporate Attorney by day and rapper by night. Robin These who plays Priscilla, a Magazine Editor. Preston Davis who has a recurring role on HBO's "Entourage" plays Eliot, a Sports Agent. And Chante Frierson who has played on "A Different World" and the Broadway production of "Rent". Chante's character is Kourtney, a 26 year old Musical Heiress. Catch "Buppies" weekly starting this Tuesday, November 24 at 3pm at BET.com. It is scheduled for 10 episodes that will run for 10 weeks.

This weeks Fave Five are my five favorite famous couples. I've set them apart in categories. Sort of. 5. Hip Hop/R&B Sean "Jay Z" Carter & Beyonce Knowles They're cute. They're hip. They're haute. They're not showy. They don't seek out the papparazzi. They just handle their business building their individual empires and holding on to the #1 spot on the music charts. They work hard. They play hard. Originally, they appeared to be an odd couple that made you scratch your head but now they just seem to click. 4. Country Tim McGraw & Faith Hill Two beautiful people who made three beautiful babies. You never know if a celebrity couple marry each other for PR or if they're the real deal. They seem to truly love each other. Tim has a budding acting career on top of his singing career (I'm actually about to go say his latest flick "The Blindside"). You can catch Faith every Sunday before the kickoff of the Sunday Night Football game. 3. Rock Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale Haute! Haute! Haute! I adore this couple. She's total sweet rocker chick who you just want to hang out with. Gavin is the gorgeous, cool, eclectic husband who can quit his day job to model. They rock their kids in hip, edgy apparel and keep the music playing on and on and on. 2. Hollywood Will Smith & Jada Pinkett-Smith Where do I begin? Let's talk about balance. He is the yin to her yang. They compliment each other so well. Supportive, expressive with their love, great role models, and dedicated parents. They decided years ago never to work in the same year. If this is Jada's year to to do a film, Will focuses on the day-to-day tasks on the home front and vice versa. They have also been a wonderful example for blended families showing that you can be inclusive with your ex-spouse and maintain harmony. 1. All Around Barack & Michelle Obama No brainer. No explanation needed as to why this is my favorite couple but I'll give a couple of reasons for good measure. They not only ooze a feeling of love but also a sense of respect as well. This is the blueprint for marriage. Gentlemen, this is how a woman is suppose to be treated. Ladies, this is how you lift up your man. They seem to be able to maintain a back-to-basics attitude all while running a country. And the thing I love most is that they let you know - marriage is not a fairytale. Marriage takes work in order for it to be successful. The Obamas show their commitment to each other and their family. *Honorable Mention Hazel & Roger Williams They may not be famous to you but they are celebrities to me. These are my grandparents, rest their souls. They were the most amazing pair and an absolute wonderful example for me to see. My grandfather was 'the man of the house' but we knew who really ran the show. Granddaddy knew that too. ;-)Their house was open to so many who didn't have a place to go. Since I was an only childe, they use to take me on 'special' trips with them that I couldn't tell my cousins. I was like the chosen one. Or so I thought. Later in life I learned that they did that for everybody. But that was their magical way of making you feel like you were the most important person in the world. I treasure the memories they created and am proud to be their 'grand'.
Today on the View, Elizabeth Hasselbeck shared a story about Tiana, the newest princess from the Disney movie, the Princess and the Frog. Actually, the first black princess Disney has ever created in their 80 plus year history. Elizabeth gave Grace, her 4-year-old daughter, a Tiana doll, which Grace loves very much. She plays with her hair and totes her around wherever she goes. While out and about in the streets of New York, Elizabeth was greeted by some unwelcoming looks as people, white people, looked perplexed that her daughter was carrying a black doll. When asked if maybe they were looking at her because of who she is, she stated she was hidden underneath a baseball cap. I am black and grew up on white Barbie dolls. I didn’t think much about the color of my dolls’ skin until later in life when my uncle started giving me African Barbie dolls for Christmas. The name escapes me but they weren’t Barbie dolls from Mattel. These dolls came in full African garb with beautiful headpieces. He sold them in his bookstore that exclusively sold books written by black authors. It was the first of it’s kind (the bookstore) in little old Richmond, Va. It actually may have been one of few in the country given this was the late 80s but I digress. I find it interesting that Disney now has a new Princess whose doll I can only assume will be a hot commodity. But is this a safe assumption? I know amongst my black friends, there is excitement and anticipation for this beautiful black princess. They are buying not just the doll but also any other piece of merchandise associated with Tiana. My curiosity has piqued to know how this Princess is being received by my white compadres. Will Tiana be on their Christmas lists? Do my white friends buy dolls of other races for their children the way we buy white dolls for ours? Over at Mattel, the birthplace of Barbie and one of my former employers (an awesome place to work I might add), they are launching a collection of black Barbie dolls that come with fuller lips, wider noses, and cheek bones that are more pronounced. This marks the first time Mattel is selling a non-white doll that hasn’t just been painted over the classic blond Barbie. The designer, Stacey McBride-Irby, is black and was inspired to create dolls that better reflect darker skin children. Black Barbie was first introduced in 1980. The new black Barbie collection includes Grace, Kara, and Trichelle who have little mentees name Courtney, Janessa, and Kianna. Each doll has her own style and interests. Mattel does not release sales figures but admits these dolls are attracting the attention of girls of all colors and ages. I’m glad Elizabeth Hasselbeck of all people, brought a little awareness to the subject of dolls and skin color. In this era of change, it seems the topic of race relations is becoming more open and candid. Elizabeth appeared to be hurt and frustrated from the reactions she received because he white child was carrying a black doll. It’s sad that race is still an issue. Even if it is just a doll.
The Timeless Love For High Heel Shoes Author: Roberto Sedycias Most women experience a boost in confidence when wearing high heels. This oftentimes begins when a little girl wants to try on her mother's shoes. Men have always and still do love to see a woman walking in high heels. The click, click sound they make can also be quite mesmerizing. The ego boost often achieved with a hot pair of heels can cause many women to go into debt because of their constant spending on these shoes. The styles, heights, widths, colors, straps, buckles, pumps, etc. is continuously added to and revamped by shoe designers. Most modern fashion magazines not only contain numerous ads for these shoes, they also produce whole fashion spreads based on high heels and their accompanying looks. High heel shoes were invented in the 17th century by Egyptian butchers. This historical note is rather gory and would make most women that wear them cringe: the butchers wore these so that they could walk over the blood of the animals they slaughtered without getting it on their bare feet. Heels also assisted horse riders from slipping. Catherine de Medici was the wife of the Duke of New Orleans, and she may be credited with the modern popularity of the high heeled shoe. She was very short, thus she wore high heels to appear taller. Other women began to desire this as well; hence the beginning of the craze for these shoes. During the French revolution, the heel waned in popularity until the twentieth century. Flat soled styles then took over, only to be replaced once again by high heels. The Louis heel introduced this rise. Modern day pants and jeans are even cut with the intention of accentuating the wearing of high heel shoe. Stilettos became the rage in the 1900's. These continue to be a favorite of some women, and most men. This heel looks like a dagger, and it usually lends itself to a rather sexual look. Many women wear them to parties or even some to the office. Heels now range from 2 inches to 8 inches high. There are platforms, stacks, wedges, and spool heels. It is accepted if a woman wears funky, fashionable, and crazy high heels even to the grocery store. Many women like to look seductive, and most place much importance on being in style. They enjoy turning the heads of men (within reason), and they love to have an enhanced, swinging type strut. The butt is lifted, and the legs are made to look much longer. A sexy high heel shoe can make a woman feel fantastic. These shoes can be bought in multiple styles and colors to match multiple outfits and dresses. Many pairs these days are ornate enough to look like museum pieces. Their price tags can give this idea as well! A modern twist on the high heel shoe is that many of them (even the highest) can be quite comfortable as opposed to former designs. There are even athletic models. Lots of shoe styles in heels resemble clothing items. There are lace ups which take after the corset, acrylic models that look futuristic, and jewel encrusted styles that look a lot like decadent art pieces. The high heel shoe enjoys an interesting and illustrious history, unlike many items in the annals of history. This is one fashion item that generally consistently remains in style. They enjoy increased and varied revamps and style changes, and make a woman feel sexy and sassy. Today I decided to get out of the house, I mean ur….umm… office. My daughter doesn’t have school on Tuedays and Thurdays and lately has spent more time being neglected by me because I have been breathing new life into my online boutique. So I decided to incorporate business with pleasure by paying a visit to one of the showrooms in South Orange County that represents quite a few of the lines that I carry. It was a way to get her out of the house and give me a chance to familiarize myself with some new merchandise. I cleaned up myself (which is rare) and packed the kids, I mean ur…..ummm…. my assistants, for a little road trip. It was such a nice ride. The sun was shining bright and the temperature was a mild 77 degrees. I’m so spoiled by the southern California weather and can’t imagine living anywhere else. It’s nothing like the wind kissing your face and good music blasting. As soon as the wind hits, my baby boy throws his hands in the air and gets this big Kool-Aid smile that’s so infectious. I wish I could bottle it up. The showroom actually served a dual purpose as a children’s boutique as well as a showroom. The owner manufactures her own line of products and represents a dozen other clients. If you have a product that you’re selling, invest in a photographer who can enhance the look of your merchandise. It was nice to see some of the products I was considering up close and personal. The photography online did them no justice. After business was done, I took Mini Me over to lunch at the Golden Arches where they had a little playground. Yes, Germy Germ City. We made sure to scrub hands and Purell down when it was all said and done. I shared my fries with Bam Bam while Mini Me ventured through the jungle gym thingy. A few playmates came and went as we spent at least an hour hanging out in the play area. All-in-all it was a nice little outing. I have to learn how to mix more business with pleasure so my little ‘assistant’ knows how special she is to mommy. When I was working full time I use to day dream about being able to stay home and spend more time with my babies. Can’t lose sight of the priceless moments.
Top 10 things to do on a Rainy Day Rainy days and Mondays always get me down. That's what Karen Carpenter sang. Here are some ideas for a rainy day and nowhere to go. 10. Clean your house from top to bottom. You’re stuck inside. Why not make your home a haven. Clean those corners that have never seen a disinfectant before. 9. Cook. Dust off that cookbook that you really never have time to use because your days are so hectic. Make a deliciously sinful dessert. 8. Eat. After all that cooking and cleaning, put your feet up and taste the fruit of your labor. 7. Purge. Get rid of things that are taking up unnecessary space. Your trash may be someone else’s treasure. 6. Catch up on your DVR. I’m sure you have a DVR full of shows you’ve recorded. A rainy day is a great opportunity to play catch up. You might get through an entire season in one day! 5. Read a book/magazine. Turn everything off and just be one with the literature. 4. Play dress up. There are probably some things in your closet that you haven’t worn in a while. Try them on and see if they still fit. They may no longer be in style. This goes along with #7. 3. Go through your phone book and call people you’ve been “meaning” to call. Rainy days are God’s way of slowing us down. Reconnect with an old friend or auntie you haven’t spoken to in a long time. 2. Make a game plan. When was the last time you wrote down your goals? Maybe it’s time to tweak your goals. Focus on yourself and your future while you have some downtime. We tend to get caught up in the rat race without noticing life passing us by. 1. NOTHING. Put your feet up and catch up on some much needed rest. All that other stuff I just talked about will be there. :-)
There was a time when HGTV was a mainstay on my television. All day. All night. I never tired of Divine Design or Design on a Dime or Designed to Sell. You name it. I watched it. I noticed that lately, I haven't been watching HGTV nearly as much as I use to so I decided to revisit the network that has given me more design ideas than I know what to do with. There was a problem, however. I couldn't find a design show anywhere. What I did find was HRTV - Home & Real Estate Television. Every show had something to do with buying a house, selling a house, or hunting for a house. My First Place. Property Virgin. Sell My House. What's going on? What happened to all my design shows? I need to know what backsplash I need in the kitchen that I'll one day have custom built. Where is Candace Olsen and Vern Yip to show me how to create the perfect family room? I'm going to need Home & Garden Television to get back to their regularly scheduled programming before all is creatively lost in my house.
When I was a young girl, I was super duper shy. You would never catch me doing anything that would bring attention to myself. I didn't dare want to be noticed. My daughter, however, is my complete opposite. But that's how Murphy wanted it when he wrote his laws. I love the new trend of pettiskirts. They are so fun. So girly. I can't wait for my little one to have her own. She's the type that would rock it on a casual day just to ride her bike. At lovechilde, you'll find custom made pettiskirts from Tippy Toes Boutique for your little eclectic princess in an array of colors and prints. Sizes range from newborns up to the tweens (14). The best quality nylon chiffon, satin and laced are used to create these beautiful pieces and hand inspected prior to shipment. Pettiskirts are great for weddings, photo shoots, or just to play dress up. What little princess wouldn't have fun in one of these? I think they are absolutely adorable.
Social media websites are popping up all over the place. There is something for everybody from business owners to dog lovers. Whatever your passion, there is a social networking site just for you. 5. www.stumbleupon.comI must confess, I don’t do much of the stumbling but my significant other does. He sends me great articles that are relevant to the things going on with me and my business. With so many social networks, I had to scale back and this was one of them. But thanks to him, I still get my fill because he does the stumbling for me. Stumbleupon is great for like minded people who would like to share information. 4. www.twittermoms.comTwitter moms is for moms who twitter! Who knew there were so many mothers out there becoming entreprenuers? Although Twitter is for everyone, not just business owners, business owners have found it to be a great tool for networking and marketing. Twitter moms, being a spin-off to Twitter, is comprised of quite a few mothers who are cooking, cleaning, diaper changing, and building empires all at the same time. Hooray for mom! 3. www.skoutfairtrade.ning.comWhy do I like this site? As a WAHM with an online children’s boutique, this is a great site because it brings together other WAHM’s who have businesses within the children’s industry. This website allows you to network directly with other online store owners, designers of children’s apparel and unique goods, manufacturers, web designers, photographers, and just about anyone associated with the children’s industry. There are various groups you can join that touch on subjects specific to the industry. This network was started by a mom from Australia so you will find more than half of the contacts are from down under but the networking is worldwide. 2. www.twitter.comMentioned just above, Twitter is ADDICTIVE. I registered with Twitter probably six or seven months before I actually started using it. Then when I started using it, it took me another two or three months to get it and understand what I was doing. If you want to get to know a lot of people in a little bit of time, join Twitter. If you have a business and are on a budget when it comes to marketing and pr, join Twitter. If you have no life, join Twitter. If your life is exciting then you DEFINITELY need to join Twitter. It’s big fun! Join the party. 1. www.facebook.comLove it! Here’s another social website that took time to “get” or understand. When I was working as a recruiter, Facebook was one of our clients. Since they were our client, we were required to join the network, create a page, and get familiar with how it works. That’s only fitting. Needless to say, since I was forced to join and I didn’t know many people using the network, it didn’t get used much. Plus, I was a little embarrassed to tell my grown friends that I have a Facebook account. At that time it was mainly used among teens and college students. After about a year and a half and reading up on Web 2.0, I realized that I may be able to use Facebook to help me market my business. Since becoming more active with it, I have over 1,000 friends. I mean friend friends. People I actually know. Friends from high school. Relatives I rarely get to talk to on a regular basis. They’re all right there on Facebook. Updating photos of nieces and nephews I haven’t seen since they were in diapers. High school friends who I haven’t seen since Madonna was a virgin on a gondola. It’s been a blast reconnecting with so many people while at the same time, getting some buzz worthy attention for my business. So that’s why Facebook is my favorite social network site. What are your favorite social network sites? I’m always looking for great networks to join.
.jpg) When you set aside time to yourself without any distractions you will grow emotionally stronger. Building emotional strength is important so you can deal easily and calmly with all life throws at you. If you are emotionally fragile, you will crumble under the pressures of daily living. Time to yourself is such a rare thing. Not many people invest time for the sole purpose of being alone. So much can come out of it if you do. And once you get into the habit of being alone regularly you will come to realize its power in your life and will start to crave this time alone more frequently. You don't have to meditate in the lotus position to be alone. You could set aside some time just to potter around your bedroom, paint your toenails or do some gardening. Whatever takes your fancy that is not strenuous or mentally taxing. Being idle is what is important here. Make at least one hour each week just for you. No matter how hectic your schedule is, just give yourself one hour. Everyone can find one hour. This short time for yourself, really will work wonders in your life. And the more calm and peaceful you feel, the more you will want to allocate time to yourself. When you build up your emotional strength this will ripple out and impact every area of your life. Your relationships with everyone will improve, your work-load will seem easier to tackle at work and you will feel emotionally strong. You won't feel so defensive and agitated with others. You won't feel so hurried and frantic. And you won't feel like a bundle of nerves that is about to burst when something or someone provokes you. Instead you will feel poised and in control. You will feel more flexible and accepting. And you will feel more loving and compassionate towards every person you meet. The power of being alone should not be under-estimated. Think of the 10 most "together" people you know. Find out what they do to be so calm and in control. Incorporate the things they do into your own life. Time alone is one way but there are many others. Find out from those who are already there and copy them. You have nothing to risk or lose when you make the effort to take time out. Regular time alone is all it takes to build up a reservoir of emotional strength. And once it is built up you have everything to gain. This article was written by Paula Owen. It's 10:30pm and well past my bedtime. But I've been burning the midnight oil lately giving my online boutique some much needed attention including new merchandise and soon-to-be new face. Tonight I decided to give myself a break from the computer, however, by going to the grocery shopping. Such is the life of a mom of three whose day never has any dull moments. Besides, I loathe going to the grocery store with my little angels. Between the whining, begging, and temper tantrums, I equate our grocery store visits to dying a slow death. .jpg) To my surprise, I was able to do a power grocery run in 30 minutes. I mean I was zipping in and out of the aisles. I had the store to myself. That's how it is in the sleepy suburbs. Nighttime may be the right time to get things done. My evening was capped off with a man about 70 years old, riding his bike through the parking lot with his maingy dog attached in one of those bike stroller thingys you keep your kids in. It was the most bizarre scene and I was made at myself for not having my camera by my side. Anyhoo, off to bed now. Another day in the life. I know, I know. The excitement never ends!! G'night!
Over the past couple of weeks, I have been breathing new life into my online children's boutique, lovechilde. I am adding new and unique pieces on a daily basis and will be celebrating one year of business on Sunday, November 15. I am so pleased to be able to offer stroller parasols from Shady Baby. This falls under the why-didn't-I-think-of-that category. ShadyBaby Stroller Parasols is a stylish, sturdy way to protect babies from the harmful effects of the sun. They come in bold, vibrant colors with retro accents. It's easily adjustable in three places and blocks the sun from any direction. It's hard to decide but if I had to choose just one, I think the Red Ruffle Damask would be my favorite. It's simply irresistible.
I spend quite a bit of time on www.twitter.com chit chatting and networking with people from all corners of the earth. Twitter is great for small business owners who want to connect with other business minded people and find ideas for social networking, cake recipes and everything in between. Today I stumbled on this great collection called laidback created by a woman name Tina Shoulders from the Bronx. Upon graduating from Drexel University, Tina worked with some of the top fashion houses in New York which led her to create laidback. laidback is a collection of pillows with an urban flare. They can currently be seen everyweek on MTV’s the Real World Brooklyn. The silk screen pillows are made out of denim and look like a great addition to the ecclectic person’s home furnishings. I love anything home goods and these pillows from laidback are original and nicely designed. Check out the website at www.laidbackhome.com. I’m particularly feeling the “boomin” and “my tatt” prints.
TORONTO -- Lionsgate plans an aggressive expansion to more than 600 theaters for Lee Daniels' "Precious" over Thanksgiving after the inner city woe drama cranked out a buzzworthy $1.9 million on 18 screens on its opening weekend. The Vancouver-based mini-major is wasting no time with its platform release of "Precious" as it continues Friday in five additional markets, including Washington and San Francisco, to "a couple hundred" screens. During a conference call with analysts Tuesday, Joe Drake, president of Lionsgate's motion picture group, said "Precious" would move to 800-1,200 screens from Nov. 20. Drake said "Precious" has already generated word-of-mouth not normally seen until the sixth or seventh weekend of a prestige film title's theatrical release. After the enthusiasm of the analyst call, a cost-conscious Lionsgate later in the day revised its projected Thanksgiving dates for "Precious" down to "over 600 screens." Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer cautioned it was too early to predict boxoffice gold for the indie film phenomenon, but added: "The $5.5 million investment in 'Precious' looks set to prove profitable." (This report comes from the Hollywood Reporter.)
Being a loving and a fair parent is the goal of anyone who has a child or children but a Christian parent wants to do more; they want to share the love of their savior Jesus with their kids. Doing that is natural and often successful but being a Christian parent in many ways is the same as being any type of caring parent. You need to establish rules and apply them fairly and consistently. It is most important that no one child is given preferential treatment and that the house rules are clearly explained and understood. Christian parents can be like other parents in that they can fall into the same old trap of thinking that raising your voice gives them authority. It usually has the opposite effect. While Jesus was keen to invite children to hear his message, the bible also advises youngsters to obey their parents and to honor their mother and their father. So we have a balancing act here within a Christian family. If a reprimand is required, as mentioned, raising one's voice does not give power. What the child requires is the appropriate response. If the punishment means the child is grounded or loses a privilege, then so be it. But the Christian parent must enforce the reprimand and follow through. To not do so means the child sees any threat from the parent as an empty threat. It should be fairly easy for a Christian parent to establish guidelines and rules for the behavior of their children. The bible has some simple and clear rules such as the ten commandments. Using the bible as a basis for your house rules is a real benefit for Christian parents. Respect for your parents is an essential part of a Christian home. Christian parents may have some excellent rules but they will do even better if they can teach their children about self-discipline. Knowing right from wrong is important for every child and being able to control their behavior is the best result possible. A young child who is brought up to exercise self-control will have that excellent quality for life. Another essential concept which a child must understand is that of reward and punishment. Once the rules for the child's behavior have been agreed upon by both parents and clearly explained to the child, responses from the parents must be accurate. When the child abides by the rules they are rewarded. When they break the rules they are punished. Children learn quickly and respond well to doing well. It should not long for them to understand there are consequences if they fail to follow the rules set by their folks. One of the possible traps for Christian parents is allowing God to control and educate their children. The responsibility lies with the parents. Using God as the head of their household, the Christian parents must work hard and sensibly to lovingly raise their children. As the old saying goes, "God helps those who help themselves". Yesterday my six year old heard sirens raging down the street. One police car/firetruck/ambulance after another. He told me to IMMEDIATELY turn on the news so he could find out what's going on.
As a single parent, one of your biggest concerns is likely what the effects of single parenting are on your children. Will they grow up differently, not having a mother or a father? Will they struggle with life because of this? It would be naïve to think that there are no effects on the children when they are raised by just one parent, but what exactly are those? Negative Effects of Single ParentingOf course, people tend to look at the negative effects first, but the fact is that most of these can be offset by a caring parent. In many cases, particularly where a parent has died or there has been a messy divorce, the remaining parent is in mourning for what they had. If they aren't careful, this can result in turning inwards and not giving the children the nurturing they so desperately need at this point in time. By ensuring that you pay attention to your kids during this time and even get them counseling or other help if needed, you will offset this potentially negative effect. You will no doubt hear others saying that a child needs a male or female influence in their life, depending on which parent is missing. This can easily be remedied by helping your child find a positive role model of the opposite sex. Programs like the Big Brother/Big Sister program can help with this, or you might let your child spend time with an uncle or aunt who is a good influence. Dealing with your child as he or she gets older can be very difficult, whether you have someone else parenting with you or not. Don't be afraid to seek help, or the grudges that your teen holds against you could turn into a lifetime of bitterness. Counseling may be needed if your child feels that you are the reason their other parent is no longer in their lives. Positive EffectsNot everything about single parenting is bad. In fact, most children coming from single parent families grow up with an immense amount of respect for their parent. They understand the great sacrifice it takes to raise a child and hold down a job all alone. Another benefit of this type of upbringing is that these children are often more independent and can handle what the world throws at them. This is a great example of turning something unpleasant into a great benefit. Since they don't have two parents there for them, children of one-parent families learn to be more self-reliant and in some cases, will work very hard to help their remaining parent, be that their father or mother. The effects of single parenting on your children really depends on you. Are you going to complain and whine about being the only person to look after them, or are you going to make sure that your children have the best life possible, with or without the other parent? If you aren't afraid to ask for help, the end results will be far more positive. Pieter West travels the world on a regular basis and have written about numerous subjects. I am so excited about one of the latest products I added on lovechilde. Tutu Legz are these great leggings that have a light weight tutu attached to them. This great little one piece is light enough for your little dress up doll to wear in the streets without looking like she's in a leftover Halloween costume. The two designers of these great pieces are sisters and best friends. Sizes start at 0-6 months and go up to 5T. They also vary in length. Choose from shorts, pants, or capris. This is so for perfect for that little girl who can decide if she wants to be a princess or a tomboy.
I love how my kids can call on me for hours upon hours for every little thing they need. Mommy, can I have some juice? Mommy, where's my baseball glove? Mommy, I'm hungry. Mommy can you tie my shoe. Mommy, I have to boo boo. It's even better when all three of them are calling on me at the exact same time. The 6 year old wants me double tie his laces, the 4 year old says her socks are uncomfortable, and the 8 month old is holding on tight to my calves with his head between my legs making swishy sounds with his mouth. The beauty of it all is that they usually bypass daddy in the process. It doesn't matter what I'm doing or where I am they come for me first. I could be in the shower while daddy has his feet propped up and they will come look for ME in order to put a straw in their Capri Sun. I could come home with an arm full of groceries, sweat dripping down my face and my pants hanging on to my waist by a thread. They will come to me, at the same time, to solve their problems. Yet daddy is right there in the house flipping through a newspaper. It is never ending. Gotta love mom.
If you went to Howard University, you know the rest. ”.....I go to Howard U!” I have a dear friend from Ethiopia who is beyond proud of her heritage. She left Ethiopia when she was a teen and spent her high school, college, and now adult years in the United States. But still, her heart belongs to Ethiopia. We worked together in Long Beach, CA and shared many stories over the course of the year and a half we worked together so I had many stories related to my Howard days. She asked me one day, “why are you so proud of Howard University?” I replied, “Why are you so proud of Ethiopia?” That question alone answered hers. I don’t know what it feels like for people outside of Howard University but for those who went to my school, we are forever connected. It’s a feeling that cannot be put into words, this bond that is shared with others who have graced the campus. You can’t buy it or bottle it up. You can only experience it and share that experience with others who have attended “the Mecca”.
I'm suppose to be nestled in a sleeping bag in a 10 X 10 tent out in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of hyperactive Cub Scouts right now. Well, not the middle of nowhere. Just the middle of Brea which is the next town over. Instead, I'm chilling on my sofa with my feet propped up and my laptop on my lap. How did I dodge that bullet you ask? Well, I have an 8 month old and the temperature dropped significantly this evening. What kind of mother would I be if I took my little one out into swine flu land on a night like tonight? It was tough but someone had to do it. ;-)
